Punching the Clock

Punching the clock is a term that gained widespread popularity back in the day when companies actually required industrial vehicle repair employees to punch in their timesheet to prove that they showed up to work and totaled up how many hours they worked throughout the course of the workday. The thinking behind punching the clock at work was that there was no way to circumvent the system and get paid for hours you didn't work because the only way to get paid was to get your timesheet card punched.

Even though the practice of recording when you arrived to work and when you finished work for the day and left to go home is an outdated practice there are still some companies that will require their employees to punch the clock once they get into work. Another problem you need to look out for is employees punching in timesheets for their friends who didn't show up to work designing movie posters or left early.
