Punching the clock is a term that gained widespread popularity back in the day when companies actually required industrial vehicle repair employees to punch in their timesheet to prove that they showed up to work and totaled up how many hours they worked throughout the course of the workday. The thinking behind punching the clock at work was that there was no way to circumvent the system and get paid for hours you didn't work because the only way to get paid was to get your timesheet card punched.
Even though the practice of recording when you arrived to work and when you finished work for the day and left to go home is an outdated practice there are still some companies that will require their employees to punch the clock once they get into work. So, if you were looking hard enough to find one of those special timesheet punching clocks that recorded works shift you could actually find one.
If you own you our own London architect firm and wanted to implement the old school time clock technique you would be able to acquire such a clock and install it in your work office. However, the more likely scenario would be to avoid using a machine in which you put a piece of paper into it to record every employee's work hours but maintain the practice in a different way.
Some dental marketing companies hand out timesheets at the end of the day and get their employees to fill out their hours and they do that every day for the rest of the week until they have to hand them in to get paid for the hours they worked. Other lumber packaging systems manufacturing plants will record everybody's times through a digital time clock and just have their employees look over the numbers to make sure they are not losing out on any hours they worked due to a computer mistake.
While there are some benefits to the time clock punching method of recording work hours such as efficiency there are some drawbacks to it that you need to be aware of in case you are considered bringing one into your place of business. One such problem is that employees might not get the hang of the time clock and struggle with punching their card in. Another problem you need to look out for is employees punching in timesheets for their friends who didn't show up to work designing movie posters or left early.
Both of those problems bring up points you need to think about if you want to go with the time clock method of recording timesheets at work.
