Halifax is a major economic centre in eastern Canada with a large concentration and combination of government services and private sector companies. Major employers and economic generators include the Department of National Defense, various levels of government, and the Port of Halifax. Agriculture, fishing, mining, forestry and natural gas extraction are major resource industries found in the rural areas of Halifax.
The municipality has a growing concentration of manufacturing industries and is becoming a major multi-modal transportation hub through growth at the Port of Halifax, the Halifax International Airport, and improving rail and highway connections. A real estate boom in recent years has led to numerous new property developments, including the gentrification, and urban renewal of some former working-class areas.
The extraction of natural deposits in the rich earth surrounding Halifax, such as the natural gas fields off the coast of Sable Island, as well as clay, shale, gold, limestone, and gypsum extraction in rural areas all greatly contribute to the Halifax economy.
Since Halifax is such a beautiful city many decide to get married here. Some begin their search of Toronto wedding venues and end up finding the perfect location for their ceremony in Halifax. Many area residents find temporary employment opportunities with these wedding events such as tent rentals and catering.
